Excessive Blinking in Children

Last Updated : February 28, 2021

Excessive Blinking in ChildrenUsually, the child sneezes, the body appears to be cold and hot, and so on, the parents can judge that the child is ill.

But some of the less common behaviors, parents are likely to ignore, like “excessive blinking.”

Blinking is a way to protect yourself from fatigue. An average person blinks once every few seconds, about 3 to 17 times per minute. Those who exceed this standard can be regarded as over blinking.

Children’s excessive blinking not only because of eye problems but also because of physical or psychological discomfort.

Dear mothers understand immediately what is the reason for the constant blinking and solutions!

Excessive Blinking Cause in Children

1. Tic

Face twitches may cause excessive blinking! Tic is a muscle spasm that affects the muscles inside and around the eyes.

Children with grumpy temper are prone to tic. If this is the case, we need to seek professional advice as soon as possible.

2. myopia

The common cause of excessive blinking is myopia. If this happens to children, parents should take their children to see an eye doctor as soon as possible.

3. Eye allergy

If the child blinks too many times, tears, or excessive secretions around the eyes, it may be allergic.

4. Dry eyes

When children’s eyes are very dry, they may blink excessively, or their eyes are burning and itching. In this case, parents should make sure that their children do not rub their eyes. Doctors usually prescribe some eye drops, or moisturizing eye drops to relieve the discomfort of the eyes.

5. Eyestrain

Eye fatigue can cause excessive blinking! Reading in low light, spending a long time on the screen, and lack of sleep can lead to eye fatigue.

6. OCD

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a kind of anxiety disorder, which affects many children but can not be diagnosed. This mental state can also lead to excessive blinking or facial twitching.

7. Blepharitis

Blepharitis refers to the bacteria that can appear on the eyelashes or the edge of the eyelids, causing inflammation of the eyelids, which is one of the reasons for children’s excessive blinking.

How to Prevent Excessive Blinking in Children

1. Protect eyes

Parents can choose protective glasses for their children to protect their eyes from dust, sunlight, and other irritants.
At the same time, it is also necessary to prevent dry eyes. Eating more omega-3 fatty acids can stimulate lacrimal gland and reduce inflammation, thus helping to prevent dry eyes.

2. Release pressure

Don’t think that children don’t have pressure; in fact, they will encounter unhappiness in their life and study. Parents can teach them some relaxation skills, or do some decompression activities with them, such as yoga.

3. Healthy diet and lifestyle

Let children supplement nutrition, drink more water, eat more food to protect their eyes.
Besides, we should also pay attention to different living habits, such as sitting posture, gesture, etc., all of which help to protect eye health.

4. Pay attention to lighting

Children should be taught to turn on the light when they are watching TV, using computers or reading books. Parents should also ensure that the light is sufficient. Too dark or too light in the room will also make the eyes uncomfortable.

5. Enough rest

Make sure your child has enough and quality sleep every day.

6. Screen time control

Children are most interested in the three electronic products of telephone, computer, and TV, but parents need to monitor their children’s use time in these electronic pacifiers so as not to affect their vision
